Three positive effects of a clean and clutter-free lifestyle

You may find it hard to believe, but keeping your home clean and clutter-free has positive effects on your overall well-being, and science can prove it.

We get it – moping the floor, cooking dinner, doing the laundry as well as full-time work can be overwhelming at times. That said, having a proper organisation plan for daily chores will free you up and make your life a little less stressful.

Often, it’s a matter of motivation. Staying on top of all the chores needs some ambition and drive. We have listed the top three health benefits of being organised below to boost your inner Marie Kondo and get you started on your clutter-free lifestyle today!

REDUCES STRESS AND ANXIETY

A study in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin found that women who describe their home as ‘cluttered’ or full of ‘unfinished projects’ experience higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol. These women tend to feel more depressed and fatigued over the course of the day. By means of this study, you should feel happier and more relaxed after decluttering and organising.

ClickClack’s Tip: When putting a to-do list together, be generous with the timing. If you plan enough time for each task, the less likely it is that you’re feeling overwhelmed. Also, including “me-time” on the list is a must!

HELPS WITH SLEEP

If you are going to bed feeling a little guilty about the clutter in your bedroom, there’s a high chance that it will negatively affect your sleep. In the bedroom, clutter influences you unconsciously (or consciously), which makes you feel stressed and makes it difficult to have a good night’s rest.

According to a survey conducted by the National Sleep Foundation, 73 per cent of the respondents said that fresh, clean sheets have a positive impact on their sleep experience, as it makes them feel more comfortable and 19 per cent claimed they sleep better when they have made their bed in the morning.

ClickClack’s Tip: Take five extra minutes before you go to sleep to put your clothes away and give your bedroom a quick clean up. Try to make your bed in the morning as part of your everyday routine.

HELPS MAKE BETTER FOOD CHOICES

Meal planning promotes a healthier lifestyle, because you’re well aware of what you eat, at what time and how much you’re going to have – also known as mindful eating.

Having a balanced, healthy diet requires forethought and organisation. We tend to buy more takeaway meals, sweets and fast food when we are not planning our meals and writing our shopping list.

Furthermore, a messy room encourages unhealthy food choices. A study, published in the Journal Environment and Behaviour, found that people who spent time in an unorganised room were twice as likely to eat a chocolate bar than an apple.

ClickClack’s Tip: Set specific times for meal planning and prepping in your calendar every week. Never go grocery shopping without a list and make this a habit.

Research proves decluttering on an everyday basis can benefit your physical and mental health. Start including organisation in your day-to-day life, whether it’s writing a to-do list or putting your clothes away. You’ll soon feel less stressed about your chores and you’re able to enjoy your surroundings while you think more efficiently and cleanly.
