5 tips for the perfect picnic (+ Mediterranean Potato Picnic Salad recipe)

The perfect way to take advantage of warm, sunny days is with a relaxed picnic including a yummy Mediterranean Potato Picnic salad with your friends and family. There is nothing better than an afternoon of delicious food and drinks shared between loved ones.

To help you create the perfect picnic experience, we’ve taken the trouble out of planning so all you have to do is put it together and enjoy the occasion – mishaps and spoiled food will be a thing of the past!

Tip 1: Create a dedicated picnic basket

Keep everything organised and be prepared for any future picnics by creating a dedicated picnic basket. Include all of your basic items such as plates, cutlery, plastic glasses and a chopping board. Napkins and a packet of wet wipes are also handy additions. A picnic is never complete without a picnic blanket – which can also double as a tablecloth when need be. Lastly, be sure to always have some cooler bags and ice packs on standby to keep your food fresh and cool.

Tip 2: Have everything you need for a BBQ

If your picnic destination has BBQ facilities you plan on using, don’t forget to pack all of the essentials such as a spatula, tongs, grill fork, gloves and oil. In addition, a newspaper for cleaning and some foil to line the BBQ are also handy items to have. You may also like to have an apron packed to ensure your clothes don’t become the victim of any oil stains. Tip 3: Keep your food fresh

There’s nothing worse than sitting down for a picnic only to find your food has gotten warm and your tasty cheese is looking anything but tasty. With a few simple steps, you’ll stop this from being a common occurrence. Prep your food the night before or first in the morning, then store in the fridge until you’re ready to go. Make sure your icepacks are frozen and ready to be packed at the same time as the food. Most importantly, ensure you have some airtight and leakproof containers for storing your food such as our Daily Container.

Tip 4: Include enough beverages for everyone

Typically, a bottle of water is a staple to any outdoor venture. A fruity cordial is always a great refresher on a warm day, alongside a bottle of some bubbles for the adults. For our coffee and tea lovers out there, prepare a thermos of hot water and some long-life milk to mix with your drink of choice.

Tip 5: Prepare a selection of tasty food

To create a simple grazing plater, simply chop up your favourite fruits and vegetables and include a selection of dips and crackers. Some homemade mini sandwiches are also sure to be a hit – include options such as cheese, lettuce, ham or egg. However, be wary with additions such as tomato or beetroot as this may cause the bread to go soggy. Kids will love fairy bread with plenty of hundreds and thousands!

If you’ve got BBQ access, make sure to pack enough meat so everyone can enjoy sausages in bread or homemade burgers. Mediterranean Picnic Potato Salad

This salad gives the standard picnic potato salad a fresh new taste! Using salty olives and capers, fresh crunchy vegetables and creamy feta cheese, this Mediterranean picnic potato salad is sure to impress guests of all ages at your next summer picnic. 

Serves: 4Potato Picnic Salad

Prep time: 20 minutes

Cook time: 20 minutes


500g small potatoes, scrubbed

1 punnet cherry tomatoes, chopped

1 cucumber, chopped

1 can pickled artichokes 

½ bunch parsley, fresh, finely chopped

100g feta cheese

3 tbsp olive oil

1 lemon, juiced

½ cup kalamata olives

3 tbsp capers

Salt and pepper to taste


  1. Place potatoes in a medium pot filled with water. Cover with a lid and place on the stove, bring to the boil then let simmer for 15-25 minutes until tender. This time will vary depending on the size of your potatoes. Plunge in cold water to stop the cooking process and allow them to cool down. Drain then slice in half or into bite-sized chunks.
  2. Add cooled potatoes, tomatoes, cucumber, artichoke and parsley to a large bowl. Sprinkle over salt and pepper and drizzle over olive oil and lemon juice. Toss to combine.
  3. Transfer to a dish or container and top with feta, olives and capers.
